Benigoi Koi For Sale
Benigoi (also known as Higoi) are non-metallic, solid Red coloured Koi. Given Beni and Hi translate from Japanese as ‘Red’ it is no surprise that Benigoi are Red from nose to tail. A good Benigoi should be free of blemishes, scars and bad/loose scales. The fins of a Benigoi should be Red or Orange and in some instances may have White tips (known as Aka Hajiro).
Benigoi on occasion may exhibit incredibly striking, glittering scales. This phenomenon is known as Ginrin. A Benigoi displaying such scales would therefore be known as Ginrin Benigoi.
The history of Benigoi (as with all Koi) begins with Magoi. Magoi were the original Koi Carp, mostly Black in colour. During generations of selective breeding, the Magoi eventually began to demonstrate some Red pigmentation, normally on the belly of the Koi. This genetic mutation was extremely desirable and after many years of continued selective breeding, we were presented with a fully Red fish which would eventually become Benigoi.
The rich, striking colours of Benigoi set them apart and make them a beautiful addition to any Koi pond.
